Allow Only One Instance of Microsoft Outlook

Allow Only One Instance of Microsoft Outlook

Microsoft Outlook is the Office product that allows users to gain access to their emails, contacts, and other information. It is used by many businesses and most times people set it to automatically start when they log into Windows. Users can also open multiple instances of Outlook, either on purpose or by accident, which can cause confusion and wasted resources. This default behavior can be easily modified with a small change to the program shortcut. To avoid multiple Outlook instances, simply add the “/recycle” switch to the command line target of the Outlook’s shortcut.

  1. Right-click the Outlook shortcut in your start menu, select “More…”, then select the menu item “Open file location”.
  2. Right-click the Outlook shortcut in the file folder, and click on “Properties”.
  3. Select the “Shortcut” tab.
  4. In the Target field, append “/recycle” to the end of the command.
  5. Click OK to exit the property dialog

The next time you start Outlook, it will only allow one instance of the program. If the user attempts to restart a second instance, nothing appears to happen.

Remove Shutdown and Restart Buttons In Windows 7

Remove Shutdown and Restart Buttons In Windows 7

Sometimes you might have a shared computer where you don’t want the users to be able to do a Shutdown or Restart. Today we take a look at using Local Group Policy Editor to remove those buttons from the Start Menu in Windows 7.

Note: This process uses Local Group Policy Editor which is not available in Starter or Home versions of Windows 7.

Disable Shutdown, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate Buttons

To open Local Group Policy Editor, click on Start and type in gpedit.msc and hit Enter.

In Local Group Policy Editor navigate to User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar and double click on Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down, Restart, Sleep, and Hibernate commands.

Now you want to enable this setting and click Apply and Ok. You can leave a note to yourself in the comment box, which I find comes in handy when changing a lot of settings in Group Policy.

Now when you look at the Power options in the Start Menu, the only options available are Log off, Switch user, and Lock.

The setting goes into effect right away for all users of the machine. The button to turn off the computer if the user hits Ctrl+Alt+Del will be gone as well.

Increase A Laptop's Battery Life [How To]

When you’re constantly on the move and rely on your laptop to perform when you most need it, you need to be sure that your battery won’t suddenly drain on you, leaving you in the lurch. If this sounds like a situation that you frequently find yourself in, perhaps you should look at upgrading to a laptop battery with a longer life. But if that step sounds a bit drastic, there may be a few things that you can do to prolong your battery’s power, when you don’t have access to a mains supply.
Turn down the brightness of your screen

Most modern laptops allow you to control the brightness of the screen. As you might expect, the brighter the screen, the more power is required. Dim the screen and you could find that your battery lasts a lot longer.

Shut down programs that aren’t being used

It’s often the case that you’ll have a number of programs running, yet you’re only using one or two of them. Although you might not see them running, they could be running in the background, adding to your CPU load, and consuming more energy. Shut down the programs not in use and save energy. If you’re unsure about programs running in the background, simply open the task manager.

Clean the battery contacts

You should clean the connection points on your laptop’s battery every now and then. Dampen a cloth with alcohol and use it to clean the points. Clean points mean that electric current can pass through efficiently, meaning you save on wasted power.

Use the CD/DVD drive sparingly

CD and DVD drives use a substantial amount of energy to operate. If possible, opt to use the hard drive instead, as this requires less energy.

Defragment your hard drive regularly

If you regularly defragment your hard drive, it will operate more efficiently. The more efficiently your hard drive operates, the less demand is placed on the battery, meaning you will get more life out of it! As an additional advantage, this will also help in speeding up your computer.

Do not use wireless networks

If you are not in need of a wireless connection, it is better to turn off the wireless receiver on your laptop as it puts unnecessary strain on your battery. Most laptops have an easy to locate switch to turn off wireless networks.

Disable unnecessary visual effects

Your computer requires computing power to show all those stunning visual effects. More computing means more battery consumed. Hence, if you want your battery to last longer, it is advisable to preferably turn off or at least tone down those visual effects.

Change Power scheme

Changing your power scheme to Power Saver makes your computer adjust its settings to use power minimally and give you extended battery life. Most operating systems allow you to change power schemes.

Regularly clean the air vents and keep your laptop cool

Your laptop will operate far more efficiently at lower temperatures. If your air vents are clogged up with dirt and dust, the machine cannot be cooled efficiently. By regularly checking that air can pass freely through the vents, you can be sure that your laptop remains as cool as possible. You can use a brush or a lightly dampened cloth to remove any dust or dirt. For even better cooling, you can try a laptop cooling pad.

Refrain from using external devices

External devices, such as external hard drives, iPods, and even your mouse can put unnecessary strain on your battery. If it isn’t absolutely crucial that you use these external devices, shut them down and disconnect them entirely to save on battery usage.

Only multitask when absolutely necessary

Performing multiple tasks at any one time, for example listening to music whilst downloading files and creating Word documents, will again put unnecessary strain on your computer. When battery power is scarce, don’t over-work your laptop and drain the battery too quickly.

How to Cut Videos with VLC Media Player

VLC offers the option of using the Record button (as covered earlier) to allow users to save a portion of the video clip that is currently being played. However, the problem with using the Record button for cutting videos is that you need to actually play the entire portion of the video that you need. This makes it especially difficult to cut lengthy portions of a video. Moreover, exact start and stop times are difficult to maintain. This article offers a better way to cut videos with VLC media player that solves both these problems.

How to use VLC as a video cutting tool
To cut videos in VLC, follow the steps given below:-

1) Open VLC media player.
2) Play the video which you want to trim and note the time in the video from where you want to obtain the trimmed video and also note the end time up to which you want the video to be trimmed. Take the time in seconds. For example, if you want to start cutting from 2 minutes and 30 seconds and end cutting at 5 minutes and 4 seconds, the start time will be (60*2 + 30)=150 seconds and stop time will be (60*5 + 4) = 304 seconds. These values will be needed later.
3) Now, click on Media in the Menu bar.
4) In the dropdown menu, click on Convert/Save. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+R shortcut key combination to directly reach media options.
5) Click on the Add button on the right of the File selection box to load the video which you want to cut.
6) Tick show more options on the bottom left side of the dialog box to show extended options.
7) In the extended options, enter the start time which you noted earlier. Notice that in the Edit options field, a :start-time=### string will be added. There is not an option to add the stop time. So, you need to add the stop-time in the same format in the edit options manually, ie. add ":stop-time=###" without quotes in the edit options where ### is the stopping time in seconds. For our example, the edit option text field should look like that in the image given below:-

8) Click on Convert/Save on the bottom right side and follow all the
steps to convert a video in VLC. To see the steps on how to convert a video, see this post.
9) In the following dialog box, click on browse to select the destination where your trimmed video will be saved.
10) Click on Start to begin the cutting process.

VLC's progress bar will show progress. Do not close the player at this stage as it will result in the output video getting corrupted.

Note: On some older PCs, after the cutting process is completed, VLC may become unresponsive. If that happens, just close VLC Media Player with the Task Manager. This will not affect the trimmed video.

The speed with which VLC cuts the video will depend upon your computer's specifications. A faster computer cuts quickly while slower PCs take a lot of time.

Formats supported:
VLC can be used to cut videos of all formats that it can play. This means that you can use VLC to cut videos of the following:-

Container formats: 3GP, ASF, AVI, DVR-MS, FLV, Matroska (MKV), QuickTime File Format, MP4, MPEG-2 (ES, PS, TS, PVA), Raw DV, MXF, VOB, RM, DVD-Video, VCD, SVCD, DVB
